American Literature

The course examines the main movements in American literature before World War I: the beginnings of American literature during the colonial period, American romanticism, transcendentalism, realism, naturalism. Main authors and their works: Nathaniel Hawthorne, Washington Irving, Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, Walt Whitman, Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Mark Twain, Emily Dickinson, Henry James, Steven Crane, Sherwood Anderson, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway.
