French culture and civilization 1

Short overview of the history of France until up to the end of XVII century through the prism of three segments of cultural development: a) history of nation: Gaelic-Romance civilization, from the Republic of Franks to the Republic of France through the change of French royal dynasties and the birth of national consciousness, wars with England and Italy, religious wars, formation of absolute monarchy and the time of Louis XIV; b) history of ideas: religious mysticism of the Middle Age and the Holy Crusades, Protestantism, Calvinism, the ideas of Humanism and Renaissance, Janesenism, the birth of Cartesian spirit and philosophy of Descartes; c) history of art: romanique, gothic, renaissance art, baroque and doctrine of classicism in art, architecture of Versailles, the development of opera.
