Italian Literature 5 –The Novel in the 20th Century

The course examines the differentia specifica of the novelistic texts. It includes an overview of the Italian novelistic tradition, stressing the characteristics of the Modern novel. It covers the major authors starting from the passage from 19th to 20th century: D’Annunzio and the Esthetic concept.  The novel of the magic realism: Bontempelli. The identity problem: Svevo and Pirandello. Mystery and absurd: Dino Buzzati. Around the Neorealism: Vittorini, Pavese, Primo Levi, Alberto Moravia. Women writings: Elsa Morante. The novel in the Postmodern perspective: Italo Calvino and Umberto Eco.
