The Poetics of Romanticism

The course examines Romanticism as a stylistic formation; the socio-political and spiritual foundations of Romanticism in Europe; the “Weltschmerz”; the interest in folklore; the movement from fairy tales to fantasy stories; the attitude towards gothic literature; exoticism/eroticism/demonism. It also covers the literary genres of Romanticism (lyric poetry, the romantic epic, play and novel, the artistic fairy tale, the oneiric prose, and other types of fantasy literature); the types of romantic heroes; the theory of the grotesque and other (anti)poetic auto-metatexts; romantic irony; the literary/historical and poetic significance of Romanticism for the further development of European literature and culture.
