The Poetics of Symbolism

The course examines the boundaries of modern poetry – the concept, the origin and key representatives; the temporal and spatial coordinates of Symbolism; Baudelaire’s contribution; the movement from the aesthetics of ugliness towards an aesthetics of evil; key developement lines of poetry – affective, intellectual and imaginative; Parnassianism and Decadentism; the Symbolist Manifesto; the main features of the poetics of Symbolism; Aestheticism/Artism; the individualisation of the symbol (sign/emblem). It also covers the interpretation of texts and individual poetics, as well as reflections of the poetics of Symbolism in contemporary Macedonian poetry.
